Managers of marts in Castlerea, Roscommon and Elphin
are this week advising farmers to dose and vaccinate weanlings prior to sale.
They
point out that to gain maximum benefit from vaccination, calves should be
wormed twice before vaccination. Calves certified with primary vaccination
should be vaccinated at least ten days and not more than 35 days on the date of
the sale.
Starting
in September, vaccinated calves will be sold first at local marts. Managers
also advised that calves suitable for the live export trade should have in-date
export certs.
The
initiative has been organised by marts in Roscommon, Castlerea and Elphin in
conjunction with the local Irish Farmers’ Organisation in a bid to promote the
home and export trade. For further information, contact your local vet or mart
manager.
