There were ecstatic scenes in sporting circles in
County Roscommon this week, as local athletes returned both the Nicky Rackard
and Fr. Manning Cups to the county.
On
Saturday, a gritty Roscommon display saw the county’s hurlers overcome Armagh
in Croke Park and there were scenes of great jubilation as Athleague’s Mervyn
Connaughton climbed the hallowed steps in the Hogan Stand to receive the
silverware from GAA President Nicky Brennan. (See pages 7, 62, 63)
On
Wednesday evening, the amazing week continued as the county’s Under 16
footballers clinched the Fr. Manning Cup title in a close contest at Longford
Slashers on Wednesday evening. After extra time Roscommon captain Patrick
Brogan was presented with the silverware to the delight of the large Roscommon
contingent present. (See page 50).
