Thursday last was a big day in Lanesborough when the Lough Ree Athletic Club organised a fixture for the primary schools in the area. There was a fine turnout with the following schools represented, Ballyleague, Fermoyle, Newtowncashel, Cloontagh, Gaelscoil and Stonepark.
The club was disappointed that some of the local schools did not participate but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the officials were stretched to cope with the numbers involved.
There were over 50 competitors in the 3rd and 4th class boys’ ball throw, 46 entrants in the 5th and 6th boys long jump while the girls 3rd and 4th class ball throw attracted over 40 entrants. Heats and finals were the order of the day in the sprints so anyone winning a medal well earned it.
For the benefit of the teachers, events were confined classes rather than age groups so some children may have been at a disadvantage to some extent.
On reflection the club officials were impressed with the talent that emerged from Ballyleague and Cloontagh schools both of which would be underrepresented in the club.
Finally a tribute by way of a word of thanks to all who helped to make the day a success, the teachers and parents who helped out, club officials, Lanesborough Community College for the use of their facilities and making some of their students available to assist with recording and judging. Rachel Costello, Shannon Rooney, Eleanor Lisle, Lauren Guinan, Enda Berga, Eoin Sorohan, James Hilton and Danny O’Sullivan, you are a credit to your school and yourselves and your help was greatly appreciated.
Finally some schools enquired about relays, however time did not permit on the day.
The club is open to suggestions on a suitable date and time to hold an inter school relay competition that would suit all schools or even any suggestions on how to improve the event.
