GAA Coaching Corner

Friday night course

Due to huge demand, the award 1 football youth and adult course which Roscommon coaching and games development are conducting is now filled with no more places available. The course commences this Friday night, March 19th in Roscommon County Board GAA offices at 7 pm, and the following day, Saturday, March 20th, venue yet TBC and finishing on Saturday March 27th. 

Ethics course

All hurling coaches who undertook our foundation courses in St Dominic’s and Padraig Pearse’s recently have their code of ethics and best practise course on Tuesday night March 23rd in the old school Knockcroghery at 7 pm sharp. The course will be conducted by Roscommon Sports Partnership tutors Annette McGeeney and Sarah Mulligan.

First year blitz

On Thursday, March 11th in Kilbride GAA pitch, Roscommon coaching and games development held a very successful first year secondary school football blitz day. The following schools took part on the day: Roscommon CBS (two teams), St Aloysius College, Roscommon Community College, Marist College Athlone and Athlone CC who entered all Roscommon teams. All teams played four games on the day.

U12 Go Games

Roscommon coaching and games development will be holding three U12 club football Go Games blitzes commencing on Tuesday, April 6th at three different venues throughout the county. Clubs will be divided into different venues and teams can enter as many teams as they wish on the evening. More details in the coaching corner next week.

Primary school coaching

Part time football and hurling coaches will be back in all primary schools on Monday April 12th for the start of a ten-week coaching programme.

Award 1 hurling

After the foundation courses in hurling are completed, Roscommon Coaching and Games Development will be announcing the date for the award 1 hurling course. If you are interested in doing the above course, please contact GAA games manager Willie Hegarty.

Award 1 football

If any coach is interested in taking the award 1 child course in football please contact GAA games manager Willie Hegarty as we plan to hold a course shortly.

Minor league

The first round of the Connacht minor football league is on this Saturday, March 20th, in Ballyhaunis as Roscommon play Mayo with a 5 pm throw in time.

New referees

A training course for new referees will commence in March with a date yet TBC. Anyone male or female who is interested in doing the course can contact Seamus Clogher on (087) 1258849 for further details.

Cúl camp details

Next week Roscommon coaching and games development will be announcing all dates and venues for GAA VHI Cul programme for 2010. Parents will be able to book their kids on line from Tuesday, March 23rd on the national GAA VHI Cúl camp website.

Coaching survey

All clubs have received their coaching qualification survey for all coaches involved with their teams from U8 to senior. We are asking all clubs out fill out the relevant details and email it back to GAA games Willie Hegarty ASAP.

Code of ethics

In conjunction with Roscommon Sports Partnership, Roscommon Coaching and Games Development have concluded their five code of ethics and best practise courses and wish to thank tutors Annette McGeeney and Sarah Mulligan for all their help and assistance. One more course for all hurling coaches who have just completed their foundation course in St Dominic’s and Padraig Pearse’s will be held at a later date.

Articles and photographs are now invited for the next edition of Into the West, the magazine of the Connacht GAA Council. GAA clubs and other units with items for inclusion should send them to the magazine’s editor Liam Horan at magazine@connachtgaa.ie, or by post to Liam Horan, The Farmyard, Liskillen, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. The next edition of the magazine will be released early in May and anyone wishing to sign up for the free e-zine version should email their details to magazine@connachtgaa.ie
