GAA Coaching Corner

First year blitz

A first year blitz will take place this Thursday, March 11th, in Kilbride GAA pitch, commencing at 10.30 am. Roscommon coaching and games development are holding a first year secondary school football blitz day. All schools in Roscommon are invited to attend the nine-a-side blitz and can enter as many teams as they wish. The day will be organised by our full time coach Peter Carney and our TY students. 

Award 1 filled

Due to huge demand the award 1 football youth and adult course which Roscommon coaching and games development are conducting is now filled with no more places available. The dates of the course are as follows, commencing on Friday night March 19th in Roscommon county board GAA offices at 7 pm, following day Saturday, March 20th venue yet TBC and finishing on Saturday March 27th.

Hurling foundation

Roscommon coaching and games development will be holding a hurling foundation courses for all clubs on this Friday night, March 12th, in Padraig Pearse’s GAA club commencing at 7.30 pm and concluding on Saturday morning at 10.30 am. Tutors presenting the course will be Proinsias Killion and Michael Carroll. 

Award 1 courses

After the foundation courses in hurling are completed, Roscommon coaching and games development will be announcing the date for the award 1 hurling course. If you are interested in doing the above course please contact GAA games manager Willie Hegarty. If any coach is interested in taking the award 1 child course in football please contact GAA games manager Willie Hegarty as it is planned to hold a course shortly.

Minor league

The first round of the Connacht minor football league is on Saturday, March 20th, in Ballyhaunis as Roscommon play Mayo.

Referees’ training course

A training course for new referees will commence in March with a date yet TBC. Anyone male or female who is interested in doing the course can contact Seamus Clogher on (087) 1258849 for further details.

Cúl camps

Next week Roscommon coaching and games development will be announcing all their dates and venues for our GAA VHI Cúl programme for 2010. Parents will be able to book their kids on line from Tuesday March 23rd on the national GAA VHI Cúl camp website.

Coaching survey

All clubs have received their coaching qualification survey for all coaches involved with their teams from U8 to senior. All clubs are asked to fill out the relevant details and email it back to GAA games Willie Hegarty.

Ethics courses

In conjunction with Roscommon Sports Partnership board, Roscommon coaching and games development are running code of ethics and best practise courses over the next few weeks. All GAA coaches who are currently attending our football and hurling foundation courses will be able to avail of these courses. All club coaches both male and female who wish to avail of the code of ethics course are asked to contact GAA games manager Willie Hegarty ASAP.

Into the West

Articles and photographs are now invited for the next edition of ‘Into the West’, the magazine of the Connacht GAA Council. GAA clubs and other units with items for inclusion should send them to the magazine’s editor Liam Horan at, or by post to Liam Horan, The Farmyard, Liskillen, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. Clubs and other units of the GAA can avail of the magazine to publicise events they are planning to hold in the near future.
