Frenchpark boxers prepare for provincial championships

The Frenchpark Boxing club were in action again on Friday 12th February in the Mick Ward Memorial Tournament. Michael Brady (Boy 2 46 kgs), traded punches with Alan Keogh, Rhode BC and after three tough rounds was declared the winner.

Patrick Mullen (Boy 3 50 kgs) was opposed by Sean Cantrell, Brosna BC, Co. Westmeath. To be honest Patrick did not box in the first two rounds and even though he appeared to get on top in round three he hadnít done enough and lost on a unanimous decision. Bernard Morahan (Boy 3 54 kgs) was opposed by Michael Stokes, Loughglynn. Bernard got to work from the first bell and attacked his opponent with some very good straight left/right combinations. Stokes made Bernard work very hard and the strength and perseverance of the Frenchpark boxer proved good as Bernard was declared the winner after three pulsating rounds.

Liam Greene (Junior 75 kgs) was to box Dermot Woods Brosna B.C who didnít turn up. He was replaced by an opponent who was much older and far more experienced. Liam boxed like a champion in the first round and was well ahead. However, he got caught in round two and good refereeing by Frank Ward, the contest was stopped. This meant Liam was in form to take part in the County Championships on Sunday 14th February.

These championships were held in Ballinagare where clubs from Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo took part. Many of the weights were not contested but those that took place were of a very high standard and it is encouraging to see the improvement in our boxers.

Results of County Championships: Boy 1 39kgs semi final: Ml. Sweeney, Ballinacarrow lost to Aidan Dowd, Frenchpark. Final: Aidan Dowd, Frenchpark defeated Paul McGetterick, Ballinacarrow. Boy 3 50kgs semi final: Cormac Nolan, Drumsna lost to Patrick Mullen, Frenchpark. Final: Liam Grady, Loughglynn lost to Patrick Mullen, Frenchpark.

Liam Conlon (Youth 2 75kgs) was defeated in the Connacht Final in the first year of his boxing career. The victor was the experienced Martin McDonagh, St. Alibheís BC, Tuam. It was a tough three rounds and although it appeared that Liam was in control the judges saw different and gave the decision to McDonagh. Although Liam was disappointed he has gained experience which we hope will be of benefit in the future.

Next week the club will be represented at 11, 12 and 13 years in the provincial championships. Best of luck lads.
