Two people who have strong connections with County Roscommon struck gold at the weekend when they won a huge lotto jackpot of almost €7.5m. Tommy Joyce, who comes from Ballymoe, was for many years involved in business there, and his partner, Michelle Ryan, who is originally from Castlerea area, collected their windfall at the Lotto headquarters in Dublin on Tuesday last.
The couple, who are involved in the toy importation business, have a 7-year-old son, Dylan, who actually picked the winning numbers. Tommy Joyce and Michelle Ryan live in the Athlone area and they spent €95 on lottery tickets which they bought last Saturday at Kilmartin’s Filling Station on the Dublin Road, Athlone.
Michelle Ryan (30) met Tommy Joyce (64) when she worked as an assistant in one of his shops and they arrived on Tuesday on a bus at National Lottery headquarters with about 50 friends to collect the cheque for €7,457,357.
Michelle Ryan says that she intends to buy a new car and go on a holiday with her winnings while Tommy Joyce says he would like to buy a few racehorses. Son Dylan “has a large shopping list already” according to Michelle Ryan.
Tommy Joyce has been in poor health in recent months and is confined to a wheelchair and was in intensive care in hospital with septicemia. However he is recovering from that illness and he hopes to be out of the wheelchair in the coming weeks.
The winning numbers were 4-13-16-19-30-45. Michelle Ryan also won an extra prize of €1839 as she had a match five selection as well as the match six selection!
