The next session of the South Roscommon Singers Circle takes place in Murray’s Lounge, Knockcroghery, on this Saturday, 3rd of October.
It promises to be a very special occasion with the welcome return of former Solas lead singer Deirdre Scanlon from Nenagh. Deirdre was previously a guest of The Circle while she was with the renowned US based outfit a couple of years ago, but she has since returned to Ireland to resume her solo career. Aficionados of the trad scene of recent times will be well acquainted with Deirdre’s work so far and those hearing her for the first time will be wondering why we haven’t been hearing more of her on radio and on the live circuit up to now. This is an opportunity not to be missed.
Also sharing the guest slot with Deirdre on the night will be a relatively unknown singer in these parts, Annie Marie Murphy from Athenry. While Deirdre Scanlon is first and foremost an outstanding interpreter of traditional ballads from this side of the Atlantic Ocean, Annie Marie’s repertoire encompasses many American folk standards as well as some fine home-grown material. Her almost country blues style should add greatly to the entertainment value on the night, making it a doubly important opportunity not to be missed. As always, admission is free, but there will be a raffle on the night and because of the double ‘guest slot’ we will be aiming to start around 9 pm. So, please come early.
The South Roscommon Singers Festival had a very unusual and interesting launch of its programme for 2009 last week in Dysart, and we will be bringing you details and photos from that in the coming weeks. The festival takes place in Knockcroghery village from the 23rd to the 26th October.
