The road from Castlerea to Roscommon, which has been closed for the last month, is due to re-open late next week to single lane traffic. The road was to reopen this Friday 22nd of June but due to unprecedented levels of rainfall this date had to be extended.
Local councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice, who visited the site this week paid tribute to the workers of Coffey Construction who have worked 24 hours per day to try to finish this project on time. The workers have had to battle heavy floods and torrential rain, which has made their job almost impossible, and yet great progress has been made with large sections of the bridge being lifted into place on Wednesday 20th June.
It is hoped all sections will be in place by Thursday evening and the road deck can then be prepared for traffic, which will take about one week.
When this is completed the road will be open to single lane traffic until the end of construction, which will include side barriers and safety footpaths.
Cllr Fitzmaurice would also like to acknowledge the patience of the general public while this construction is ongoing.
