There is speculation this week that a new shopping centre could be coming to Castlerea. It is believed that a leading Irish supermarket chain are involved in negotiations which are at a very early stage as of yet. The proposals are for the centre of the town off Main Street and if the development were to go ahead a new access road would have to be opened off Patrick Street.
It is understood that negotiations are underway with landowners in the area. The development would consist of one major store and six small retail units.
A proposal by Tesco to develop a site in Castlerea some year ago was turned down by An Bord Pleanala because of traffic and other concerns. John Earley of Property Partners Earley Auctioneers is overseeing the proposed development.
It is envisiged that plans for the new development will be lodged with the County Council within the next six months. The news has been welcomed by local politicians and community leaders in the Castlerea area.
