The man who died in Venezuela last Wednesday week after condoms full of cocaine burst in his stomach, has been named as 28-year-old Martin Beirne, a native of Termon, Boyle. He was an only son and had been living in Sligo in recent years.
The late Mr. Beirne was found dying in a hotel room in Caracas and he died later in hospital. Later last weekend two men appeared before a court in Caracas on Saturday charged with drug trafficking offences. The two men were with Martin Beirne when he was discovered at the hotel on the Wednesday. The men are aged 19 and 23 and they were remanded in custody.
Martin Beirne was son of Michael and Angela. The Department of Foreign Affairs are assisting the Beirne family who are making arrangements to have the body taken home from South America.
