Manager’s report…Maura Quigley, Roscommon Mart

“There was another good sale this week with excellent quality stock of offer. There was a cracking trade for heifers with plenty of customers actively sourcing stock.

“There was an exceptional trade for heifers suitable for beeding with a top price for an outstanding Lim X heifer weighing 580kgs and fetching €2,650. Heifer prices ranged from an average of €2.22 per kilo up to €4.57 per kilo. The numbers of bullocks on offer were small due to the large entry the previous week with prices ranging from an average of €2.01 per kilo up to €2.44 per kilo. Prices for dry cows fetched from €1.34 per kilo up to €1.73 per kilo.

“The mart will host a special sale of bullocks this Friday (30th) at 11 am with 35 pens on offer. Heifers and dry cows will also be available.

“On Friday, December 7th, the mart will host Christmas Cracker special sales for bullocks and heifers. Bookings accepted up to 5 pm on today (Thursday 29th).

“There was an improved trade for weanling heifers at this week’s weanling sale with a good demand resulting in a very high clearance of lots. Prices ranged from €2.39 per kilo up to €3.11 per kilo. There was a better trade for weanling bulls this week with prices averaging from €2.40 per kilo up to €3.42 per kilo. Again this week plainer lots are getting harder to clear.

“On Tuesday next (December 5th), the mart will host a Christmas Bonanza Special Sale of Weanlings at 5 pm and bookings are accepted up to 5 pm today (Thursday).

“There were similar numbers on offer at this week’s sheep sale with prices for finished lambs peaking at €112 for 50.7kgs. Store lambs fetched up to €89. The trade for cast ewes was similar to the previous week with prices ranging from €55 up to €110. Sales continue each Wednesday at 11 am”.

Manager’s report…Brendan Egan, Castlerea Mart

“Good numbers of stock presented again this week with trade similar to previous weeks. The heifer trade was strong especially for the quality forward stores, while the weanling rings reported a steady trade but plainer type stock remaining harder sold.

“There were also good numbers of dry cows on offer this week with a high percentage of store cows on offer. Breeding stock remains a very good trade with a top price of €2,320 paid for a Charolais cow and a Hereford bull calf at foot. The runner trade reported a good clearance with demand strongest for the continental lots.

“Cows with calves at foot made from €700 to €2,320, and springers made from €700 to €1,380 per head.

“There were 180 bullocks on offer at last Monday’s sale with prices improved for the better quality forward stores. Lesser quality stock was unchanged with a good clearance taking place.

“Sales continue at Castlerea Mart today (Thursday 29th) with our weekly sale of heifers, cows, calves, runners and weanlings. All sales commence at 11 am”.
