Cyril McDermott, the former Elphin Agricultural Show chairman and its new president, paid an emotional tribute to his predecessor, the late Willie Casserly.

Speaking of the former president, Mr. McDermott said: “He was a great friend of mine. I’m very honoured to take up the presidency since Willie passed away”.

Mr. McDermott, who had served as chairman for 23 years, thanked those who sponsor the show each year as well as Elphin Mart for providing facilities.

He also thanked the “great committee” and all those present who had assisted him, while also paying tribute to those who had passed away.

The president spoke eloquently about his successor as chairman, saying: “With time, Tommy (Gormley) will be as good a chairman as I ever was”.

Mr. McDermott concluded by once again expressing his gratitude to the show’s many generous sponsors whom he described as “very important people”.
